Equal area projections

Dear Colleagues

One of the central ideas of Community Analytics (CA) is that it is the "place" that is a core element of life and the associated metrics. In turn this means that the metrics of area are central ... and in turn how area is mapped.

For a small area, it does not matter what projection is used. It does not make much difference within the community itself ... but it matters a lot in the depiction of the world as a whole. I believe that the most widely used projection is the Mercator Projection which converts a globe into a cylindrical surface ... but I would argue that the projection developed by cartographer Dr. Arno Peters in 1974 giving more accurate area depiction would be best to use in conjunction with Community Analytics (CA).

Any thoughts?
